Based at the company’s UK headquarters in Bradford, the Senior Design Engineer will play a critical role within the New Product Development function, acting as Project Design Authority and taking ownership of the delivery of robust, innovative technical solutions across complex engineering projects.
The Role
As Senior Design Engineer, you will be responsible for defining, developing and validating technical solutions from concept through to delivery. Working within a team of experienced design engineers, you will provide technical leadership across projects, support continuous improvement of NPD processes, and contribute to the protection and development of the company’s intellectual property.
Key Responsibilities
Act as Project Design Authority, responsible for the delivery of the complete project technical solution
Generate technical requirements from customer needs and product specifications
Develop design concepts to meet defined functional requirements
Document design assumptions, trade-offs and calculations within the project design file
Evaluate design concepts, assessing technical and project risks to select preferred solutions
Use Failure Mode Effects and Analysis (FMEA) techniques to identify and mitigate technical risks
Prepare and present technical reports for project gate reviews
Generate test plans to verify design concepts and overall system performance
Identify opportunities for the protection of design intellectual property (IP)
Adopt and actively use New Product Development (NPD) processes and tools throughout the project lifecycle
Coordinate with the Quality Department to define incoming inspection requirements for component verification
Provide technical support to the Publications Department in the creation of product manuals, build books and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
About You
You will be an experienced Design Engineer, operating at a senior level or ready to take that next step, with a strong background in mechanical engineering and complex machinery. You’ll be comfortable leading technical projects, making sound engineering decisions, and communicating effectively across teams and stakeholders.
Experience & Qualifications
Degree-level qualification (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering
Proven experience leading or contributing significantly to technical engineering projects
Experienced user of CAD systems to produce models and detailed drawings
Technical Knowledge & Skills
Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) principles and standards
Material properties and engineering standards
Machining methods and manufacturing techniques
High-speed, bespoke or automated machinery (including can making industry/process knowledge)
Drawing and Bill of Materials (BoM) configuration management systems

The Role
